Arsenal kind to Blackpool

Blackpool 1, Arsenal 1

By “Spectator”

IF Arsenal’s finishing had been as good as their spasmodic approach work in the second half they could have won this game.

On three occasions with only Farm to beat, Vallance, Lewis and McPherson missed sitters.

Strangely enough it was during this period that Blackpool were mainly superior and came very close

to winning. Just after the interval Mortensen with a typical effort from 30 yards, put Blackpool ahead.

The advantage was shortlived due to bad defensive work on Blackpool’s left flank which let McPherson pass for Lewis to head in.

Blackpool’s sting was in the Mortensen - McIntosh combination, with Adams a thrustful winger. Of the backs, Shimwell was outstanding, and gave Vallance little scope on the Arsenal left wing.

Lewis had a lean day against Hayward

Result:

BLACKPOOL 1 (Mortensen)

ARSENAL 1 (Lewis)

JOHNSTON, MORTY ARE BACK

TWO of Blackpool’s England players will be back in the team for the visit of Arsenal on Good Friday afternoon.
A third, Stanley Matthews reported today that the ankle hurt in the Preston match on February 26 is still not responding to treatment.

He will not play against Arsenal, and according to Manager Joe Smith the prospects of his appearance in the two remaining Easter games at Birmingham on Saturday and Highbury on Monday are remote, writes “Spectator.”

Stanley Mortensen will be a| inside-right instead of Andy McCall, and after a test this afternoon the captain, Harry Johnston, was passed as fit and if there are no reactions tomorrow will displace Ewan Fenton at right half.

SHIMWELL OUT?

There may have to be a full back change. Eddie Shimwell had a septic toe. If he cannot play - and it is not likely that he will play - Tom Garrett will deputise at right back.

The team will be: Farm; Shimwell (or Garrett ), Suart, Johnston, Hayward, Kelly, Adams, Mortensen, McIntosh, Davidson, Wardle.

Kick-off 3-0

Only 3s. 6d. tickets for the south and wing paddocks are left on sale. Admission to the ground will be by the turnstiles.
